How did Sundays go from a day when you share a special meal with family and friends, to a day to squeeze in last minute errands and chores? Whether you’re interested in bringing back a traditional Sunday sit-down dinner with your loved ones or just looking for new meal options, this Sunday Dinner main dish recipe can help you bring it all together.

Chili glazed pork

The chill in the air makes for great indoor dining. Now that the lighter fare from the summer is a thing of the past, it’s fun to break out some meals that will warm you, even if just in spirit!

Manners tip

What better time than family time to teach your kids the importance of good manners. Table manners are especially important, considering we eat three meals a day! Consider the following manners rule to practice with your kids at the dinner table:

Don’t speak rudely about the food that is being served

Help encourage your kids to keep their negative opinions about food being served at a meal to themselves. This is important whether they are eating at home or as a guest at someone else’s house. Whoever prepared the food took time, effort and spent money on the meal. Be sure you encourage your kids to express their appreciation, even if they don’t enjoy the food. They can practice at home!

Don’t forget to encourage your kids to try a bit of all the food being served, even if they think they don’t like it. They might surprise themselves!

Chili-glazed pork with sweet potato hash

This Sunday dinner recipe, courtesy of Real Simple, is perfect for this time of year thanks to the addition of sweet potatoes, now in full swing as a seasonal vegetable. Not only are sweet potatoes good for you and low in fat, they taste great, too! The sweetness of the veggies in this dish pairs well with the spicy glaze for the pork. Your family will be fired up!

Serves 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 1 pork tenderloin (about 1-1?4 pounds)
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Kosher salt and black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 pound), peeled
  • 2 large shallots, chopped
  • 1 (5 ounce) package baby spinach, chopped
  • Hot sauce (optional)

Directions:

  1. Heat the broiler of your oven. Place the pork on a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Rub it with 1 teaspoon of the oil, the chili powder and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Broil, turning the pork occasionally and basting it with the maple syrup twice, until it’s cooked through, 10 to 12 minutes. Let it rest for five minutes before slicing.
  2. Meanwhile, in a food processor fitted with the coarse grating disk, grate the sweet potatoes.
  3. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shallots and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to brown, or about two to three minutes. Add the sweet potatoes and cook, tossing occasionally, until tender, or about seven to nine minutes more. Add the spinach and cook, tossing, until it’s just wilted, about one to two minutes more.
  4. Serve the pork and potatoes with the hot sauce, if desired.

Whether or not your kids think they don’t like what you’re making for dinner, encourage them to try a bit of it before they make up their minds. Teach them to do the same when dining at someone else’s home, as a way to show appreciation for the effort made by the host.
