Trendspotting with Jill Laine: Tribal trend

Hello SK Style Watchers! As many of you know, the tribal trend has been around for a little while now, yet every day it seems to be growing in popularity and momentum. Whether it’s Moroccan, African or Southwestern-inspired, this trend has taken over many of the prints that we see in fashion this spring and summer — which is why it’s my pick as my favorite trend of the week!

Make it your own

Hello SK Style Watchers! As many of you know, the tribal trend has been around for a little while now, yet every day it seems to be growing in popularity and momentum. Whether it’s Moroccan, African or Southwestern-inspired, this trend has taken over many of the prints that we see in fashion this summer — which is why it’s my pick as my favorite trend of the week!

So how can you wear this trend and really sparkle and shine, making it your own? I’m going to give you three easy ways to do so right now!

Our pick: Tiki Short (J.Crew , $65)

Keep it simple

First, it’s best to wear one to two items in this trend per outfit, tops. You don’t want to be a caricature or seem like you‘re trying to model for National Geographic. Tribal patterns are so visually rich that a little goes a long way. Just like food that is rich, have a little but not a lot! For sure success, wear your tribal items with basic classic pieces and neutrals. Accessories are a fabulous way to experiment with this trend: bags, shoes and jewelry!

Our pick: Tharu Tribal Necklace (SilkRoadTribal.com, $126)

Buy globally

Next, how about shopping for real ethnic pieces in your travels or online? This is one of my favorite things to do when I travel, to search out and bring home these special, meaningful and unique pieces. If you have no international travel plans soon, then all you have to do is jump online to make that Moroccan necklace you’ve been coveting a reality. From Etsy to SilkRoadTribal.com, the internet abounds with interesting, cultural items that you can adopt into your closet.

Our pick: Haute Hippie Ikat Dress (Net-a-Porter, $395)

Be bold

Finally, if you’re really brave, consider wearing this trend with bright bursts of colors or other, non-competing prints. What do I mean by non-competing? These are prints that are not tribal trend looks, such as stripes, florals or polka dots. How do you mix prints? That‘s a whole other video unto itself, but a quick tip is to mix one small pattern with one large, and make sure that there is one color that runs in both patterns that ties them together.

There you have it, SK Style Watchers! Three surefire ways to make the tribal trend your very own! On my next Trendspotting video, I’ll show you three reasons why you should be wearing the peplum trend right now! Until then, I’m Jill Laine for SheKnows Style.
