In an excellent essay over at CNN, reporter (and father) Josh Levs discusses what it was like to deliver his baby son at home in an emergency situation. Delivering my son: 'Breathe, baby, breathe!' is one of the best emergency baby delivery stories I've ever read - not surprising since the parent behind the story is a writer/reporter with CNN - it obviously helps when a parent can write their own story vs. a reporter covering the story. The result is a wonderful, must-read, father/baby/birth story. The back story - Levs' wife went into labor at home and then suddenly felt the urge to give birth. Levs, with the help of 911, delivered his little one without a hitch. However, then Levs noticed that the cord was wrapped around his baby's neck and his baby didn't appear to be breathing. Luckily, although this was an emergency birth, this story has a happy ending. Not all emergency births go as well. Here's a passage:
"It gives me a unique connection to my son, one I'll feel throughout our lives. Knowing that the first thing he heard upon emerging from the womb was me making sure he could breathe, that the first thing he felt was me holding him and unwrapping the cord, changes my relationship to him a little. It reinforces, in a powerful way, what just about all dads want our kids to have -- the feeling, the knowledge, that we will take care of them, protect them, provide for them. And don't think I won't hold this over his head when we go through his rebellious teen phase."
