It's official - the USA sucks more than anywhere else when it comes to maternity leave laws. It's always been bad here, but now we officially hold the title as the one and only industrialized nation that does not offer parents of newborns any paid leave. We earn this sole ranking because Australia, (a former no paid leave area) just passed a law that guarantees 18 weeks of leave at the federal minimum wage. Australia's new leave laws will be available to mamas and dads and goes into affect in January. The International Labour Organization notes that there is no paid parental leave in Lesotho, Papua New Guinea or Swaziland either but we get the distinction of being the only industrialized nation to follow suit. Lame. What to do? Because the USA thinks parents aren't entitled to any paid leave it places some serious hardships on families who want kids.
