The Breastfeeding Expert answers:
Breastfeeding and fitness go very well together. You can begin to do
some exercises within 24 hours of your baby's birth. The best thing is to
get back into shape gradually. At the beginning it's more important to
establish your milk supply by not overdoing your exercise.
I'm a major proponent of fitness, and I devote a great deal of space to exercise in the life of the nursing mother -- what kinds (most kinds), how much (moderate is good), and when (best right after feedings instead of before) -- in Chapter 7 of my book, The Complete Book of Breastfeeding.
Yes, very strenuous
exercise can affect the quantity and the taste of your milk, but you don't
need to push yourself to the max. Remember, you'll be nursing for a
relatively short proportion of your life -- you have years ahead to go for
the Olympics.
More for you!
