In honor of July being National Berry Month, Driscoll’s Berries has been sending me some super healthy and yummy organic berry recipes all month long. I've got two that are perfect for pregnant mamas. The first is a healthy smoothie which is a great way to get some calcium and extra fruit into your diet. This smoothie also features ginger which has been shown to quell those icky feelings of morning sickness. Smoothies also make the perfect easy breakfast or lunch on the go. The second is an amazingly luscious treat - Homemade Organic Blackberry Chocolate Frozen Yogurt that's low fat, cool, refreshing, and perfect for dessert. Berries pack a great antioxidant punch for pregnant mamas so give these a try, plus, Drscoll’s Berries offers organic berries at many stores, which means you can make these treats pesticide free!


Mixed Organic Berry Smoothie:

Prep time: 3 minutes Makes about 3 cups, or 2 servings

  • 1 cup Driscoll’s Organic Blueberries
  • 1 cup Driscoll’s Organic Raspberries or Blackberries
  • 1 cup Driscoll’s Organic Strawberries, halved or quartered
  • 1 cup organic vanilla yogurt
  • 1/2 cup Organic orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped crystallized ginger
  • Organic Berries for garnish
Blend all ingredients plus two ice cubes in a blender until smooth. Garnish with additional berries before serving. Nutrition Per Serving: 245 calories, 2.59g total fat, 1.05g saturated fat, 8.36g protein, 51.20g carbohydrate, 6.12mg cholesterol, 7.45g fiber, 89mg sodium Healthy Tip: Crystallized ginger adds a sweet spiciness to this berry blend. A few pinches of dry ginger can be substituted. Ginger is listed on many “super foods” lists, along with berries, so this smoothie is a super refreshing, healthy treat.


Homemade Organic Blackberry Chocolate Frozen Yogurt: In a blender container or food processor bowl, combine half of the yogurt, ½ cup of the berries, half of the corn syrup and half of the sugar. Cover and blend or process until almost smooth. Pour mixture into ice cream freezer container. Repeat. Freeze mixture in an electric ice cream freezer according to manufacturer’s directions. Remove dasher from freezer. Add remaining 1½ cups berries and the chopped chocolate; stir to distribute. Ripen*. *Note: To ripen frozen yogurt or ice cream, after stirring in berries and chocolate, cover top of freezer can with waxed paper or foil. Plug hole in lid and replace lid. Pack outer freezer bucket with enough ice and rock salt to cover top of freezer can, using about 4 cups ice and 1 cup salt. Ripen about 4 hours. Nutritional Information Per ½ Cup Serving: 175 calories, 3g total fat (2g saturated fat), 5mg cholesterol, 70mg sodium, 32g carbohydrate, 3g dietary fiber, 4g protein.
