Most popular baby names in Australia

Drum roll please… the results of the most popular baby name survey are in, and there are some new contenders at the top! Jack topped Australia’s most popular baby list for the better part of last decade, but it seems its reign is over, bumped in favour of a more princely moniker. Unusual spellings and soft sounding names typify the most popular girls’ names, with the number one name a surprising new entry.

McCrindle Research gathered information throughout 2011 to compile the results of its new baby name study, and the results are in: The most popular boys’ name in Australia is William, while the most popular girls’ name is Lilly/Lily.

There’s a trend towards looking to the past for inspiration when parents are naming their sons, with traditional names such as William, Jack, Oliver and Noah in the top 10. The most popular baby boy names tend to be short, easy to spell, and end in consonants.

Top 10 boy baby names in Australia:

  7. Lachlan
  8. Cooper
  9. Thomas
  10. James
It’s a different story for little girls, however, as softer names that end with a vowel crowd the top 10. Lilly was a surprise entry for many people, grabbing the number one spot, with the similar sounding Lillian and Layla also appearing in the top 100.

Popular culture has influenced Australian parents, with the Twilight series thought to have inspired the popularity of names such as Isabella (#6), Bella (#49), Jacob (#13) and Edward (#63).

Many celebrities’ kids name appear in the top 100 also, including Dannii Minogue’s son Ethan (#3), Pink’s daughter Willow (#52), Victoria and David Beckham’s daughter Harper (#53), and Guy Sebastian’s new baby boy, Hudson (#93).

Meanwhile, the preference for unusual spelling continues, with different variations on more common names making their way up the list. For instance, Jackson is ranked at 35, while Jaxon made it to number 65.
