Twilight: Breaking Dawn inspired baby names

It is impossible to deny the popularity of the Twilight saga, from the box office to baby names. With Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 out this month, we thought it was only fitting that we round up the best vampire names and werewolf names (and every creature in between!) for all those hip Twi-moms and Twi-dads.

Pregnant Bella in Twilight: Breaking Dawn

According to the Social Security Administration’s top baby name list, more parents are Team Jacob than Team Edward, as the name Jacob has been the most popular boy’s name for two years in a row!

Twilight baby names in general, however, have taken over the baby name lists. The name Cullen, the last name of Edward and his family, has been steadily moving up the charts. The names of the vampires Emmett and Jasper are increasing in popularity, as are the names of the actors that play them (Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone). Bella, the shortened version of Isabella, has been moving up the charts from number 700 in 2000 all the way to number 48 in 2010.

Renesmee

Renesmee is the child of the vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) and the human Bella (Kristen Stewart). Bella names her daughter Renesmee because she combined the grandmothers’ names — Renee (Bella’s mom) and Esme (Edward’s mom). The author of the Twilight saga, Stephenie Meyer, revealed on her website how she came up with the name Renesmee when writing the book.

“Well, I couldn’t call her Jennifer or Ashley. What do you name the most unique baby in the world?” she writes. “I looked through a lot of baby name websites. Eventually I realized that there was no human name that was going to work for me, so I surrendered to necessity and made up my own. I don’t approve of such shenanigans in real life, I don’t even believe in getting creative with spellings for real kids! But this was fantasy, and no human name fit, so I did the best I could. I named Renesmee so long ago — Fall 2003 — that the name now sounds really natural to me. It wasn’t until people started mentioning it that I remembered, “Oh, yeah, it is a weird name, isn’t it?”
