Easing back to school anxiety

The school year is right around the corner. Since most children’s
minds are still dazed by the summer sun, refreshing the proper back to
school safety tips is a must.
Dr Andrea McCoy, medical director of Temple Pediatric Care, part of Temple University Health System, offers the following tips to make this school year a happy and safe one. Since most children aren’t jumping for joy when the school year rolls around, these tips will help ease the transition.

  • Remind your children that they are not the only ones who are a bit uneasy about the first day of school. “Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible,” says McCoy.
  • Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. They will see old friends and meet new ones. “Refresh their memory about previous years, when they may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because they had a good time,” says McCoy.
  • Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school or ride with on the bus.
  • If you feel it is appropriate, drive your children (or walk with them) to school and pick them up on the first day.
