Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross announce new baby’s rockin’ name

Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross just welcomed a baby girl with an adorably appropriate name for the daughter of two parents who are kind of a big deal in the music biz. Simpson and Ross announced Jagger Snow Ross’ big debut on Instagram.

To catch you up to speed, Ashlee Simpson Ross, 30, better known as the mid-2000s alt-rocker and younger sister of Jessica Simpson, and Evan Ross, 26, son of music legend Diana Ross, are about to celebrate their one year wedding anniversary. As they approach this big milestone, the couple has welcomed a new addition to the family, born on July 30, 2015. Jagger is the little sister to Simpson’s 6-year-old son Bronx Mowgli from a previous marriage to Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz.

But back to the awesomeness of this rockin’ baby name. In a June interview with People magazine, Ross confessed that the couple had chosen a “unique” baby name for their child. He hinted that it would be easy to figure out the significance once the name was announced. If her name is any indication, Jagger may have big shoes to fill — following in the footsteps of legendary grandma Diana Ross and rocker mama Ashlee Simpson. One rock star in the family clearly isn’t enough.

Simpson and Ross are also playing into another interesting celebrity baby naming trend. Though the name Jagger is distinct, it appears to take inspiration from rock legend Mick Jagger, and it isn’t totally off-the-wall. (See these weird celebrity baby names for some that are.)

Today’s celeb couples are choosing baby girl names that lean masculine or gender-neutral, with almost no conventionally feminine names to be found. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively named their daughter James, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis named their daughter Wyatt, and even Brandon and Leah Jenner mixed masculine and feminine by naming their baby girl Eva James. Simpson’s baby girl’s name fits this trend well — Jagger is traditionally considered a baby boy name and peaked in popularity in 2012, when 118 million babies were given this quirky name.

Something as simple as a celebrity baby name can have a much deeper meaning. Simpson and Ross pay homage to their rich musical roots by choosing a sweet baby girl name that keeps it all in the family. The couple also challenges gender norms by swapping a boy’s name for a baby girl’s name. As a famous rocker and trendsetter who flirted with gender-bending by wearing women’s clothes, we think Mick would approve.
