DIY colorful enamel vases

Eden Passante

After visiting the El Dorado Hotel in Sonoma, California, I was inspired by the stunning, modern lobby and empty green vases placed on shelves as decor accents. I wanted to create something for my floating white shelves at home, so I created the same type of vases, but for a good price.

I would need quite a few vases to fill my shelves at home, and the Dollar Store seemed like a great option for finding plain, inexpensive glass vases. Lo and behold, they had several to choose from; I was thrilled. With a little enamel paint, paper towels and some paintbrushes, I was able to recreate the glass vases and in the color I wanted, too! Read below for step-by-step instructions on creating your own enamel vases.

Supplies

Supplies for enamel vases

  • Glass vases
  • Dishwasher-safe PermEnamel paint (Mediterranean Blue and white are the colors used above)
  • PermEnamel Surface Conditioner
  • Paper towels
  • Paintbrushes
  • Mixing bowl

Instructions

Step 1: Start by cleaning the vases with hot, soapy water to remove any dust.

Step 2: When the vases are dry, pour some surface conditioner in them and cover the inside of the vase, using a clean paintbrush. Pour the excess out and let the vase dry.

Step 3: In a mixing bowl, get the exact color you envision by mixing your PermEnamel paints. I mixed the blue and white to create a lighter turquoise blue.Mixing the colors

Step 4: Pour the paint inside the vase and paint the inside of the glass with a paintbrush to cover the surface. Some vases are trickier than others to get the paintbrush inside. You can also twirl the vase to move the paint around.Pour the paint

Step 5: Once the vase is painted and the inside is covered, lay it face down on a paper towel to let the excess paint drip off. You’ll be amazed at how much comes off! I liked the thicker look, so I only kept it upside down for a few minutes.Let the vases dry

Step 6: Turn the vase back over and touch up the drips. Every 15 minutes you can even out the thickness of the paint on the bottom of the vase as the paint will start to collect there.

Step 7: Let them dry overnight and in the morning you should have beautiful decor vases!

These are only for DECOR. Don’t drink out of them or put flowers in them… No water. They’re simply to sit on shelves and look pretty.
