Starting a fitness routine
![]() |
Even if you didn't exercise much before you were pregnant, there are many reasons to try to get in shape now that you are expecting. So, where can you begin? Lisa Stone, an ACE-certified Pre-and Post-Natal Fitness Instructor, has some ideas.
Your question
I have never really exercised. Well, now that I'm pregnant, my doctor says I'm at risk for gestational diabetes and says I need to really watch my diet and to start a light to moderate exercise program. - Cee, New York
The expert answers
Cee,
You should try to find a specialized pre/post-natal fitness class in your
area. If you have trouble doing so, you can always buy or rent some
pregnancy workout videos - there are several excellent ones available,
though I'm a little biased toward my Fit For 2 pregnancy workout video (details below).

If videos aren't your thing, power walking is a great way to stay in shape, as is swimming. You'll need to combine your walks or swims with some strength training using light hand weights (1-3 pounds) or resistance tubing. Make sure to warm up properly and to stretch thoroughly and gently after each workout. Also, be sure to drink LOTS of water before, during, and after your exercise sessions to stay well-hydrated.
Listen to your body's signals as to when you've had enough and never exercise to exhaustion. Couple your exercise program with healthy eating, and hopefully you'll be able to avoid developing gestational diabetes. I'm so happy that your caregiver is recommending diet and exercise as opposed to medication!
Lisa :)
