The expert answers
Samantha,
Ice skating is one of those sports, like downhill skiing, that is
usually contraindicated during pregnancy. That said, you should
really speak with your healthcare provider about the specific
type of skating you would do -- is it skating in a rink with lots
of other people, competitive skating, figure skating? It may be
that you can do some skating during your first- and early-second
trimesters. The type of skating will help determine the safety
of continuing during your pregnancy.

If you do get the okay from your healthcare provider, remember to dress appropriately for the weather, drink lots of water to stay well-hydrated (you can still get dehydrated in cold weather!), and take the proper precautions to avoid falling. (Remember your center of balance is changing!)
If your healthcare provider vetoes the ice skating, there are other outdoor activities, such as power walking, that you can safely do to stay fit during pregnancy. Or, you may decide to take your fitness routine indoors for the winter, in which case you might want to try a good pregnancy workout video, using an elliptical trainer, or training on a stair-climbing machine.
Whatever you decide, staying active throughout your pregnancy will help you have an easier pregnancy, shorter labor, and faster recovery after the birth.
Lisa :)
