How to… Add some color to your tips

Hair chalking is all the rage. It’s a cheap way you can add multicolored tips to you hair without using any permanent dyes. It’s commitment free color! If you have red hair, then you’ll need to be a little more careful about the colors of chalk you use.

Robbi Charleston of New York’s Aadri Hair Salon offers these tips for applying chalk to red hair.

Step 1: Go shopping for chalk

Head to your local craft store where you can purchase a big box of soft pastel chalk for under $10.

Step 2: Select your colors

Remember, since your hair is red, you might come up with some interesting shades once your hair is chalked. Keep in mind that yellow will come out orange and blue will look purple. The shades that we think look the best on red hair (depending on how dark or light your hair is) are green and purple.

Step 3: Start applying the chalk

Spray a 1- to 2-inch section of your hair with water while twisting it. The wetter it is, the deeper the color will be. Starting about three inches from the ends, rub the chalk along the hair toward the tips. Continue working through the sections until you have the desired amount of color.

Step 4: Wait while it dries

Wait while your hair air dries. Don’t reach for the hair dryer — you’ll blow the chalk right out.

Step 5: Use a flat iron

Seal in the color by going over each section with a flat iron. This will allow the color to last longer — maybe up to a week.

Step 6: Wash it out

To get rid of the chalk, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo and follow up a deep conditioning treatment. The chalk can dry out your hair, so the conditioner will restore some moisture.
