Few things will make you go “awww” more than a sweet little puppy or kitten. And, while a new pet is a wonderful thing, their little accidents while potty training can leave your carpet sprinkled with stains and stinking of…well, you know. Here’s how to clean pet urine stains out of your carpet.
Step 1: Don’t tempt your four-legged friend
Whatever you do, don’t try to clean pet urine stains out of your carpet with an ammonia-based cleaning product. Dogs’ urine contains ammonia, so Fido may confuse the product’s smell with his own scent and be tempted to return to that spot on his next potty break.
Step 2: Dry it out
If the stain is fresh, blot the area with paper towels to soak up as much of the excess urine as possible. If you have a shop vac or a wet/dry vacuum, use that to remove any excess liquid.
Step 3: Mix it up
Next, mix a solution of equal parts water and white household vinegar. Pour a generous amount onto the stain and work the product into the carpet fibers with a scrub brush. Blot the area again with fresh, dry paper towels, or use the wet/dry vacuum.
Step 4: Sprinkle and scrub
To continue removing the pet stain, sprinkle the area with baking soda and scrub with a cleaning product that contains hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to check the label to ensure that the product does not contain ammonia.
Step 5: Get to work
To remove old pet urine stains, dilute enzymes in water according to the directions, then soak the carpet and pad with the solution. Cover the stained area with a towel dampened with distilled water, then use a brick (or something similar) to apply pressure to the towel. If possible, let it sit for about 24 hours. Use clean, dry towels to blot excess solution from the stain. Next, sprinkle with baking soda and vacuum the area.
Step 6: Give it a shot
Take a quick stroll through PetSmart and you’ll discover a bajillion different types of products to remove pet stains, but you have to use what works for you. Remember that some stains, particularly old ones, may be tough to remove on the first try, so you may have to repeat the process to completely remove urine stains and odor from your carpet.
