Asian short ribs

Serve up a few of these delicious recipes and have an Asian backyard barbecue with friends and family. The ingredients may sound foreign to your traditional American barbecue fare, but the recipes are actually quite simple to make.

A new twist on traditional American barbecue, Asian barbecue infuses the flavor of sweet, salty and smoky with the perfect hint of spice. Serve these dishes with a warm bowl of steamed rice, a healthy side of veggies and you’re all set!

Korean barbecue short ribs (Kalbi) recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds short ribs
  • 1 small onion, finely minced
  • 3/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3/4 cup Sprite
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/8 cup sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1/8 cup scallions, sliced

Directions:

  1. Place short ribs in a large dish and sprinkle minced onion over the ribs. Mix all of the remaining ingredients in a bowl and add to the ribs making sure ribs are coated. Cover the dish and refrigerate for about an hour or overnight.
  2. Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Place ribs on grill and cook for about three to four minutes on each side. Garnish with scallions and sesame seeds. Serve with steamed rice and kimchee.

Chinese barbecue pork recipe

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds pork butt, cut into 4-6 pieces
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon white pepper
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 5-6 cloves garlic, chopped

Directions:

  1. In a small pan, combine all the ingredients except the pork and simmer until sauce is somewhat thickened. Take pan off heat, then cool. Marinate pork pieces in the fridge with three-quarters of the sauce overnight. Save remaining sauce in a separate container in the fridge.
  2. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Roast the pork on a foil-lined rack for about 45 minutes. Brush the pork with remaining marinade. Change oven setting to broil. Turn the pork pieces to char on all sides. Slice and serve with steamed rice and vegetables.

Asian barbecue sauce recipe

Yields about 1/2 cup

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2-3 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • Black pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together. Store in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for at least two hours or overnight. Brush on beef, pork or poultry during grilling. If not using immediately, keep sauce stored in a sealed container in the fridge and use within a week.
