Perhaps it’s the delicious taste of Girl Scout Cookies or simply the nostalgia of it all that convinces us to order multiple boxes year after year. Either way, we all have our favorites.
Massive devastation can ensue when the badge-wearing ladies announce that yet another flavor has been discontinued. While some flavors aren’t going anywhere (we hope), others have fizzled. We’ve rounded up our favorites and those that can stay in the cookie vault for good.
Despite what is happening in the world, we can always count on Girl Scout cookies in the new year. While the flavors evolve, the names change and the price goes up, there is still something irresistible about those colorful boxes. At $4 a box, you’ll likely want only the best, so we’re here to help you make the right choice.

Thin Mints: The reigning champion in the cookie race is the crispy chocolate covered mint cookie. Times haven’t changed much, as I distinctly remember this variety being a top hit when I pulled boxes of cookies around in a wagon myself. It is the top selling cookie out of all the varieties and a safe bet if you want to order extra to help your little lady win the top prize.
Samoas or Caramel deLites: These gooey, crispy and perfectly flavored cookies blow Thin Mints out of the water in my book. The Samoa is the Girl Scout’s second best seller and for good reason. They combine chocolate, coconut, caramel and a cookie all into one. You’ll never think about those dry mint cookies again.
Sugar-free Chocolate Chips: The best thing about this variety is that it was discontinued. Sugar-free Girl Scout cookies? That sounds like an oxymoron to me — no thanks. Apparently Girl Scout cookie fans agreed; we like our cookies with sugar and lots of it.
Peanut Butter Sandwiches or Do-si-dos: This cookie involves a layer of peanut butter sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies and is the best cookie by far with a glass of milk. If you are a fan of dunking, these cookies are the way to go. They aren’t overly sweet making them the perfect afternoon snack.
Cinna-spins, Daisy Go Rounds and Shout Outs: Much like the sugar-free cookies, the Cinna-spins and Daisy Go Rounds were both cinnamon flavored treats advertised as low-fat and sold in 100 calorie packs. Both were discontinued and replaced by Shout Outs. How long do you think Shout Outs will stick around? Clearly, we like our cookies filled with fat too.
Peanut Butter Patties or Tagalongs: If you are more of a candy fan than a cookie fan, this is the version for you and also takes third place in the race for best cookie ever. A combo between a Twix and a peanut butter cup, these cookies are delicious. However, they are messy. The chocolate coating melts all over your fingers making them the least ideal choice for unaccompanied children.
Shortbread or Trefoils: This simple classic ranks as the number five top seller of all Girl Scout Cookies, but I like to call them boring. If I am going to wait a whole year for a cookie, I want it to include some flavor. Buy your shortbread at the store and spend your money on more unique Girl Scout Cookies.
Savannah Smiles: This is the newest variety of Girl Scout Cookie and we can’t pass judgment because we haven’t tried them yet. This lemon-wedge cookie that is dusted in powdered sugar joins two other lemon cookies that have already been on the Girl Scout menu. Do you think it will stick around until next year?
Our advice is to stick with the classics. If it isn’t broken, certainly don’t try making it healthier! The new versions might taste good, but one of the biggest appeals of these cookies is the memories they invoke with each and every bite. Which one is your favorite?
