The new pet did not make an appearance at the wedding, nor will it be living with the couple. But the organization wanted to give the longtime supporter something for his new marriage.
Alec Baldwin was married on Saturday to his longtime girlfriend Hilaria Thomas. And of all the presents he received, the present from PETA may be the most unique. Or at least the most unexpected.
“PETA found the perfect wedding present for PETA supporter Alec Baldwin and his bride, Hilaria Thomas, halfway around the world: An Indian bullock named Raja who had carried a heavy weight on his shoulders for years, pulling a cart overloaded with tons of sugarcane,” the organization said in a press release on Tuesday.
However, the newlyweds will not be making room for the new present.
“Raja has now been renamed Baldwin Thomas in honor of the newlyweds,” said PETA. “And he will spend the rest of his days relaxing at the PETA-funded Animal Rahat sanctuary in India.”
Alec Baldwin has long been a critic of abuse of animals, and has recorded PSA’s for the organization.
“When Animal Rahat veterinarians first met Baldwin Thomas, his owner had brought the aging bullock to them for medical care. But when the vets saw that the 22-year-old animal was suffering from arthritis and squamous cell carcinoma in his left eye, they convinced his owner to let him retire,” said PETA.
The organization said the bull underwent a procedure to remove the growth on his eye and treated for his other ailments and will spend the rest of his days in the sanctuary.
Baldwin and Thomas’s wedding took place Saturday in New York, and just yesterday he was feeling in a gift-giving mood himself. The actor announced he would be gifting $1 million to the New York Philharmonic, another organization he has supported for a long time. The donation was made just as the organization’s current executive director is on his way out after more than a decade running the New York symphony.
