Russell Brand did Katy Perry a solid by filing for divorce, sources say. How is that possible? Read on to find out.

Katy Perry Russell BrandKaty Perry was extremely reluctant to file for divorce from Russell Brand — but it is not for the seemingly obvious reason you may think.

Sources close to the couple say that while Perry has known for a while that the short marriage was definitely over, her ultra religious upbringing taught her that divorce is an absolute sin — and she did not want to disappoint her evangelical Christian parents.

As one final act of love, Brand agreed to file the paperwork himself to get Katy off the hook with her preacher dad, sources told TMZ.

The documents, filed in Los Angeles yesterday, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split — but insiders say a difference in lifestyles is to blame.

Brand, who has been sober for years after a youth of drug and alcohol abuse, is said to have strongly disapproved of Perry’s occasional celebratory benders, including one very long overnight party in Rio, and didn’t like many of her fun-loving friends like Rihanna.

The comedian took the heat by announcing the divorce yesterday while the soon-to-be ex-couple are both out of town;  Perry in Hawaii with friends with whom she spent Christmas and Brand in London.

“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage,” he said. “I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

Katy Perry has yet to comment on the split.
