Taylor Swift and Adele dominate the American Music Awards

Let’s all say it together now: Girls rule and boys drool! Ok, we’re over playground taunts, but girls really did rule the 2011 American Music Awards on Sunday night.

Taylor Swift, Adele and Nicki Minaj were the big winners of the night — and Katy Perry took home a surprising achievement award.

Artist of the Year

A straight-haired Taylor Swift took home the Artist of the Year prize for her chart-topping album Speak Now, beating out Adele, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne and Perry.

“[C]ongrats girl. U wrote every single NOTE & LYRIC for Speak Now. That is not an easy feat. You deserve every bit of tonight,” Perry tweeted to Swift after the show.

Favorite Male Artist (Pop/Rock)

Bruno Mars AMAs

Everyone pretty much thought Justin Bieber was the shoo-in for the Favorite Male Artist Award — 800 gazillion Beliebers don’t lie. However, the adorable Bruno Mars ended up taking the prize away from him and everyone’s favorite Cuban rapper, Pitbull. We’re especially digging his new song from the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 soundtrack “It Will Rain.”

Favorite Female Artist (Pop/Rock)

Adele could do no wrong this year and that’s much of the reason why she took home the Favorite Female Artist trophy instead of Gaga or Perry. The big-voiced Brit wasn’t at the show, though — she’s still recovering from throat surgery.

Favorite Band, Duo or Group (Pop/Rock)

Adam Levine and Maroon 5 won an AMA

Apparently having the “Moves Like Jagger” will help you win the Favorite Band, Duo or Group prize. Adam Levine and the rest of the Maroon 5 boys won over party rockers LMFAO and OneRepublic.

Favorite Album (Pop/Rock)

Adele picked up another trophy for her sophomore album 21, beating Lady Gaga for Born This Way and Rihanna for Loud. Somehow we don’t think RiRi is too upset, her new album Talk That Talk is out Monday.

Favorite Album (Country)

Taylor Swift won big at the AMAs

Tay Tay picked up another award, this time for Favorite Country Album for Speak Now. She was definitely having a good time during the show, spending much of her time dancing with BFF Selena Gomez, including during Minaj’s performance.

Favorite Male Artist (Country)

Adam Levine wasn’t the only judge from The Voice to win an award — Blake Shelton took home the prize for Favorite Male Country Artist.

Favorite Female Artist (Country)

This award was all for — you guessed it — Taylor Swift. She beat fellow superstars Sara Evans and Miranda Lambert for the trophy.

“I had one of the most magical nights with my friends tonight! Hopping on a redeye to play our last 2 shows at Madison Square Garden!!” she tweeted after her wins.

Favorite Band, Duo or Group (Country)

Lady Antebellum won at the AMAs

The Band Perry picked up a lot of awards during the CMA Awards earlier this month, but crossover sensation Lady Antebellum won the Favorite Country Band, Duo or Group over the siblings and the Zac Brown Band.

Favorite Artist (Rap/Hip-Hop) and Favorite Album (Rap/Hip-Hop)

Minaj won out over mentor Lil Wayne and Kanye West in the Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist category. The Pink Barbie also hit the stage to accept the Favorite Rap or Hip Hop album for her debut release, Pink Friday.

Favorite Male Artist (Soul/R&B)

Chris Brown’s latest Twitter rant did nothing to help him take home an AMA award. He ended up losing the Favorite Soul/R&B artist award to Usher.

Favorite Female Artist (Soul/R&B)

Mama-to-be Beyonce won over her former Destiny’s Child BFF Kelly Rowland for Favorite Female Artist (Soul/R&B).

Favorite Album (Soul/R&B)

Rihanna didn’t walk away from girls’ night empty-handed — she ended up getting the AMA for Favorite Soul/R&B album for Loud, winning over Beyonce and her former boyfriend.

Favorite Artist (Latin)

Jennifer Lopez‘s glorified Fiat commercial/performance might have angered some fans and fellow stars, but she did end up winning the Favorite Latin Artist award over fellow stars Enrique Iglesias and “On the Floor” partner, Pitbull.

Sprint New Artist of the Year

Hot Chelle Rae at the AMAs

It’s hard to escape “Tonight, Tonight” on the radio these days — and AMA voters took notice by crowning Hot Chelle Rae as the New Artist of the Year over The Band Perry, Wiz Khalifa and Miguel.
