Why A-Rod couldn’t commit to Cameron Diaz

There were signs that the Cameron DiazAlex Rodriguez relationship would not work out.

Cameron Diaz

We feel for Cameron Diaz.

The star with the million dollar smile is once again cast into the single file, this time after a year-long run with baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez.

“She’s very busy with her career,” a source close to A-Rod told US Weekly. “And he’s had injuries and wants to focus on his game. They’re dedicated professionals.”

Sounds like this pretty pair has been dead in the water for a while. Sure the two looked great, popping up every everywhere from Miami to New York City, but there are somethings you can’t fake.

But there were signs that A-Rod wouldn’t be a good match, and Cameron, if only you had come to us we would have let you in on them.

Let’s start with that fact that Rodriguez, 36, is a bit of serial dater who’s been with everyone from Madonna to Kate Hudson to gals whose professions are less than discreet, shall we say, according to reports. A-Rod seems to be in a perpetual rebound from a marriage that ended in 2008 and such a condition does not lend itself to a long-term commitment. The third baseman is definitely playing the field at the moment.

Secondly, Rodriguez seems to have body issues. He’s an admitted steroid user who sometimes sports an odd orangey tan. He’s obsessed with his appearance. Not healthy. His former manager, Joe Torre, said in his book The Yankee Years that Rodriguez is not so much concerned with playing well, but rather “how it looks.” It looks like he’s immature and not ready for a relationship.

Finally, A-Rod, at the end of the day, would rather be hanging out with the guys. Coach Torre also said that A-Rod was obsessive about wanting to be like teammate Derek Jeter. And wouldn’t you know it, the Diaz-Rodriguez split came on the heels of Jeter and Minka Kelly breaking up. When Rodriguez is not obsessing about Jeter, he’s playing high-stakes poker games with Hollywood types like Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, according to reports. This is not the behavior of someone looking to settle down.

So, the signs were there. Here’s hoping Cameron, 39, makes a better choice next time.
