Fighting for equal rights is not an easy task which made the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s (GLAAD) choice to honor Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth a special one.

GLAAD revealed that Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth’s continued support and fight for equal rights made them the right choice to be celebrated. Martin is being honored with GLAAD’s Vito Russo Award on March 19 at the 22nd annual Media Awards in New York. The award is bestowed upon an open LGBT face in the media. The singer’s own coming out in March of 2010 had a profound effect on many.

“Ricky coming out was a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children, who for too long, did not have many out gay people to look up to,” GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios explained. “Through his music, videos and interviews, Ricky has sent an important message that our community wants the same things all people do: An equal chance to raise our families and take care of our loved ones.”

Kristin Chenoweth will be honored during the LA awards event on April 10. Chenoweth will be receiving the Vanguard Award, which is reserved for those who have promoted the increased “understanding” of the LGBT community. Kristin Chenoweth speaks up regularly for gay rights and gay actors including her Promises, Promises costar, Sean Hayes. In May, she came to the defense of gay actors everywhere after a Newsweek columnist said gay actors couldn’t portray straight characters in a convincing manner.

“When allies like Kristin take such powerful stands against anti-gay sentiments in the media, it sends an important message of equality,” Jarrett Barrios said. “It is a privilege to honor such a talented and conscientious advocate for fairness towards the LGBT community.”

Congratulations go out to both Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth for their GLAAD honors!
