If Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hadn’t done so well at the box office, perhaps Lionsgate would have spared us the Power Rangers. Regardless, this ’90s kids’ franchise is scheduled to hit a theater near you July 22, 2016, if they can find a director.
Based on the Japanese franchise called Super Sentai that also featured humans with extraordinary abilities, each wearing a distinct color, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are ordinary teenagers with the power to morph into supreme fighters of evil.

Though no actors have been cast and a director has yet to be secured, a script has been penned by Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (Thor), based on a story by Roberto Orci (Star Trek).
The IMDb describes the plot as, “A group of high school kids who are infused with unique superpowers harness those abilities in order to save the world.”

OK, so no dystopian society, no teen girl with a crossbow, but that’s OK, we’ve had enough of that as of late. So who will the Power Rangers battle? It’s possible they’ll reach into their past and reincarnate the evil witch, Rita Repulsa and her minions Goldar, Squatt, Baboo and Finster. Or possibly bring back Lord Zedd and his powerful Dinozords. We vote for a new antagonist, some creature we’ve never seen before.
We’re curious if the movie will stick to its basic good vs. evil themes and supernatural villains, or possibly attack more relevant social issues like climate change or immigration reform. It would certainly be interesting to see the Power Rangers at the U.S./Mexico border dealing with all those children who are trying to get into America to escape violence and poverty.

Of course, we don’t expect this kids’ franchise to get political, but it has to do something fresh to compete with Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be in theaters July 22, 2016.
