Protect your baby from the sun

dsc04699-187×250.jpg With summer in full swing, it’s important to think about sun safety. It’s been estimated that 80% of a person’s lifetime sun damage takes place before he or she is 18 years old; most of this happens in the summer and in peak sun hours.

Intense sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your baby’s risk for developing skin cancer later in life.

If your baby is younger than six months, keep her out of direct sunlight. Use the shade of a tree, umbrella, or stroller canopy to protect her delicate skin.

Learn more great tips for protecting your baby from the sun’s harmful rays…

  • Limit your exposure to the sun between 10am and 4pm, when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Most of the sun’s rays come through the clouds on an overcast day; use sun protection even when it’s cloudy.
  • Dress your baby in clothing made of tightly woven light-weight fabrics that cover her entire body. Don’t forget a super cute hat with a brim or bill to cover her face.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends sunscreen for everyone, even babies younger than six months. Your sunscreen should be broad-spectrum, waterproof, and have an SPF of at least 15. For current recommendations on the proper use of sunscreen visit The National Safety Council’s Sun Safety site.
