Is your child color-blind?

Color blindness can be tested for once your little one turns four years old.

Color blindness is fairly rare, affecting only about 8-12% of the population. However, if your child is color-blind it can affect his learning process, and you’ll likely see these signs:

• Your child is male. Red-green color blindness, the most common type, affects males almost entirely. Females make up about 1% of red-green color blind population.
• Your baby can’t seem to catch on to colors - especially red and green, and less often blue and green. Eventually your toddler should be able to tell you colors. If he’s stumped often (or all the time) on color naming by the age of four, it could be a sign of color blindness.
• Reduced overall vision - such as your child is squinting in order to see.

Color blindness is not a trait you can cure. However, if diagnosed, your child can be taught that the colors he’s seeing are actually green and red. If you suspect color blindness talk with your child’s pediatrician, because it’s very rare that a pediatrician would routinely screen for color blindness.
