| I changed the spelling of my name from "Halla" to "Halah" for phonetic and numerological reasons. My mother named me Halla (I was born in the early 70's), after the Jewish sabbath bread "Challah". Roughly translated it means "sustenance from God". My mother decided to change the spelling, thinking that the silent "C" at the beginning and the "H" at the end would be too confusing for others. Throughout my childhood I was bombarded with mispronunciations (Holly, Paula, Haley, Hallie) and the bewildermentof others. I absolutely can't stand the pronunciation of my name by Bostonians. As I grew into my name I became thankful for having what I thought was a unique name. In my early twenties many people would tell me that their language has a similar name, this intrigued me. In Scandinavia there is "Hatla". In Korea there is a great mountain named "Halla". In the Polynesian islands I am told there is a similar word. An Aremenian friend told me Halla (sp?) means "sweet one" or "innocent one". An Egyptian friend told me that in Arabic it means "pure one". I did a Google search and apparently, "Halah" is also the sister of the prophet Muhammed in the Koran, and is also the word used to describe the light around the moon. So, "Halah" is also a halo, or divine light. Whichever way you view it, it is a name that stems from very ancient origins, and essentially means the same thing. My name has given me a greater appreciation of the connection to my brothers and sisters of all races and faiths. |

| My name is Halah..translates into the light or ring of light around the moon.
It's pronounced HA-luh; which is the arabic version.
It's a tough name to grow up with, but you learn to love it as you get older.
FYI: Muhammed had no sisters. In fact, he was an only child. |
