My name is Jonah. As an adult male who lives with this name I believe I have a unique perspective.
For parents thinking of using this name, I'd advise keeping the following in mind:
1) A naval or nautical career is completely out of the question for your son. This may sound ridiculous, but it's true. To anyone in the field who has the slightest knowlege of the origin of the name, it carries deeply negative connotations.
2) I tend to get a few compliments on my name - almost exclusively from women. Almost never from men. I'm a man, and I understand why.
3) It is rare that people pronounce it or remember it correctly - I am referred to as "Joanna", "Johan", Johanna", "Joan", "Joanie", "Noah", and even "Moses" quite frequently by people who mean no harm. Usually they are quite embarrassed when the realize what they've done.
4) Up until recent years, my name had the benefit of being unique. For someone in business, a unique name can be quite valuable. However, the recent popularity of the name is beginning to erode that benefit.

I liked the names Joshua and Noah but those names are already "taken" in my family. I think Jonah has the same ring to it. The story of Jonah and the Big Fish (the Bible doesn't say anything about a whale) is an awesome story of a man who had a deeply intimate relationship with God.

Hello, I am also an adult male with the name Jonah and I thought I would share my comments. I agree with the previous Jonah completely. My name is unique and I like it for that, but it has been the source of many embarrassing and annoying moments and because of my experiences I would never name my son Jonah.
I got harassed a lot for my name when I was young, especially at school. I don' know what the climate is like now, but it is a very different name and be aware that your child will probably get made fun of somewhere down the line because of his name.
I am from the United States and have lived overseas for 10 of my 28 years. Many English speakers will not be able to pronounce this name or forget it easily, and non-native English speakers will almost always pronounce it wrong. When I was living in South America everyone called me "Yohan" or "Yonas". When I was living in Europe (England and Germany) people would never pronounce it right. Now I live in Japan and I still have problems. Whenever I introduce myself to someone I always have to say my name more than once and people usually cannot remember it.
It is not a very masculine name and it is easy for your male friends to joke around with your name. I have had this experience on many occasions, and while most of the time it is friendly, it is annoying. I can't count all the times I've been called "Joan," "Joanie" or some other variation by my male friends as a joke.
I think Jonah can be a nice name, but just be aware of the baggage that will come with this name. I have thought many times of changing my name.

I love this name. It is "smart" and has meaning. In a time when every child's name comes from a soap opera or after some B list celebrity - it is nice to hear a name that has history and meaning. I think the name has strength.
By the way- I am naming my son Jonah.

Wow. I named my son Jonah 15 months ago and get compliments most everytime someone meets him for the first time! Maybe it is all in the way someone carries themselves, even at 15 months.:)
It is such a solid sounding, non-trendy name. As for making up rhymes, or nicknames (his is Jones)...well, kids will make fun of nearly every name. Probably not wise to base a name choice on what kids do to one another for a couple of years. Hopefully, everyone grows up and leaves the 2nd grade.
Go Jonah!

My husband and I named our son Jonah. It's a very strong solid name. It means "dove" which symbolizes beauty and purity. I get complements on his name all the time. I do get those comments about the whale thing, but I say--hey, at least he lived after being swallowed by a whale!
