Just a quick tip tidbit. I was reading up on some child weight research and one study noted that safe neighborhoods result in kids who are less likely to be overweight. The research showed that even young babies benefit from safe neighborhoods because their parents are more likely to take them outside on a regular basis from the very start. In cases where parents felt their neighborhood was sketchy or downright dangerous, young and older kids were less likely to get outside and exercise and were more inclined to become overweight.

Your best bet - live in the safest area you can afford. If safe neighborhoods seem out of reach financially, look at your budget and try to adjust it in order to allow for higher housing costs. You'll save on doctor's visits later on. If safer neighborhoods are truly out of financial reach right now for your family, you can one, try to get to know your neighbors, clean up the local park, and take other actions to make your neighborhood a safer place, or two, make sure your kids get to a place that is safe to play outside multiple times a week. How do you feel about your own neighborhood?
