Labor Day Thank You cards

Make these simple, yet personal, thank you cards with your kids to thank the people that work hard in and around your community. Show your support and gratitude with a thank you card for your Mail Person, Trash Collector, Sherriff, Firemen, etc.

Materials:

  • Cardstock paper
  • Craft markers
  • Stickers

Directions:

  1. Fold one piece of cardstock paper in half.
  2. On the front, write “Thank you.”
  3. On the inside, write a thank you note to someone in your community.
  4. Repeat these steps to create more cards.
  5. Deliver the cards to each person as a thank you for all they do.

What will I be when I grow up?

Inspire your child to dream big and strive to become anything he or she wants to be. Start a conversation about what people do for a living and how they help and inspire others around them.

Materials:

  • Age-appropriate magazines
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Cardstock
  • Craft markers

Directions:

  1. With a craft marker, write “What will I be when I grow up?” at the top of the cardstock paper.
  2. With scissors, carefully cut out people from magazines (the people should be dressed in a job uniform, performing an action or skill).
  3. Glue each piece onto the paper.
  4. Discuss each profession and start a conversation about what your child would like to become when he or she grows up.

Tip: Keep a positive and encouraging tone while talking to your kids about what they want to be when they grow up. You never know what might spark their creative interests.

Labor Day puppet show

Have some fun and build your imagination with a homemade Labor Day puppet show. Create your characters and put on an act for your friends and neighbors.

Materials:

  • Lunch-size paper bags
  • Craft markers

Directions:

  1. Draw a face on the bottom part of the paper bag — make sure the top of the mouth is at the bottom fold and the inside of the mouth is under the fold.
  2. Decorate the bag to reflect your child’s favorite profession (a doctor, dentist, fireman, etc.)

DIY bank for kids

When talking about what people do and how hard people work, bring up the topic of money and how it’s made and saved. Create a bank with your child to help him learn the lesson of saving and working.

Materials:

  • Empty coffee can with plastic lid
  • Craft paper
  • Craft glue
  • Craft markers

Directions:

  1. Empty and clean out the coffee can.
  2. Carefully cut a 2-inch by 1/2-inch slit in the plastic lid.
  3. Cover the outside of the can with colored craft paper.
  4. Decorate the can.
  5. Explain to your child that he or she can “work” or earn his or her own money.
