For busy moms on the go, life can get a little chaotic at times. Make your life less hectic and keep your family organized with these sanity and time-saving tips.

1

Wake up
a little early

No, we aren’t encouraging you to get less sleep. We know moms need to get a healthy amount of sleep every day. However, you should try to wake up a bit earlier than your children. Many of us are going full speed from the second we wake up until the second we go to sleep. By waking up even just 15 to 20 minutes before you kids, you’ll be assured a little peace and quiet time before kicking off the day.

2

Grocery shop just
once a week

If you have to run to the grocery store with little ones in tow several times a week, it can take a toll on you. Designate one day a week as grocery shopping day and stick to it. Make a shopping list throughout the week and let everyone know that you are going to the store on a particular day. By making one big trip instead of a half a dozen smaller trips, you’ll find you save more time and money.

3

Take advantage of
your commute

Are you stuck in traffic for 45 minutes every day on the way to work? Take advantage of this time. You can use a voice recorder and make your to-do list or record an audio journal. If you never have time to read, get audio books. You can listen for pleasure, learn a foreign language, listen to motivational speakers or take a class through audio books.

4

Figure out your
time wasters

We all have things we do that waste time. Do you spend 20 minutes looking for your keys every morning? Start putting them on a hook on the door. Do you waste an hour surfing the web every night before bed? Limit screen time in your house — for your kids and yourself. By figuring out your time wasters and finding solutions, you’ll save time and your sanity.

5

Prepare the night before

Getting your kids (and yourself) out the door in the morning can be a struggle. Do as much as you can the night before to get prepared. Kids and adults should lay out their clothes for the next day. Backpacks and briefcases can be loaded up, lunches can be packed and the table can be set for breakfast. By doing a little extra the night before, you can cut down on the chaos in the morning, when people are tired and more irritable.

7

Pack an emergency bag

Whether you are just going to the grocery store or you are headed out on a cross-country trip, you should have an emergency bag in your car. This bag should be more than a first aid or road safety kit — it should contain things to keep your kids happy and occupied in the car, such as books, travel games, snacks and other essentials.

6

Take advantage of apps

These days, there is an app for everything. Take advantage of technology to help save time and your sanity. With banking apps, you can deposit checks from your phone. With grocery apps, you can use coupons without any clipping. With calendar apps, you can keep your family’s appointments and events organized. With food apps, you can find recipes that are quick and healthy. Check out these must-have apps for busy moms.

8

Learn to say “no”

These days, most families are overscheduled. Moms try to be everything to everybody, and it’s just not possible. You don’t need to join every group, volunteer for every committee, sign your kids up for every activity or attend every event. Decide the things that are truly important to you and your family and make them a priority. Say “no” or put everything else on the back burner.

9

Cook ahead on the weekend

Spend Sunday afternoon preparing dinners for the rest of the week. During the week, many families end up eating junk or processed food because they think they don’t have time to cook meals. If you spend just one afternoon cooking and freezing meals, you can prepare enough food for your family for a week or more. If you have food prepared ahead of time, it won’t matter if you get stuck in traffic or have to work a little late. You’ll always be just 30 minutes away from a terrific family meal.

10

Take time for yourself

You aren’t going to be able to keep up with work or your family if you don’t take care of yourself. “Me” time is very important for busy moms. Even if it’s only 15 to 20 minutes a day, you need to make time for yourself. You can relax in a bubble bath, do pilates or yoga, or just veg out on the couch and watch TV. Whatever you do, make it all about you. Moms on the go are always taking care of everyone around them — it’s also important that you take care of yourself.

Quick tip

Don’t be hesitant to ask for help when you need it. Every mom needs a little assistance now and then. If it’s in your budget, hire a young person as a mother’s helper to help take care of your kids and provide you with a much-needed break.
