Simon Cowell worries about Mariah Carey as a judge

Simon Cowell commented today on the possibility of Mariah Carey making a fair judge, and what he says isn’t good.

The Buzz – Mariah Carey Excited to Join American Idol
It’s official, Mariah Carey is joining the American Idol family as a judge for the upcoming season!

Simon Cowell reacted to Mariah Carey’s new job as a judge on his former show American Idol. But while it sounds like he was praising her, that may not be the case.

Cowell is currently judging The X-Factor, a direct competitor to Idol. His current co-judges are Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid. He has previously spoken out about how much he likes his current judges, and he praised them again today to compare them to Carey.

“I’m happy for her. I like Mariah. I think she’s going to find it difficult to say no,” he told E! News of Carey’s responsibility to separate the contestants who should be cut with the ones who shouldn’t. “You’ve got to say no to people. And she’s sweet.”

More than anything, he seemed to be showing how similar the two shows are and how the staffing is one of the most important parts of it.

“They are harder to please than me or L.A.,” Cowell said of Britney and Demi, to E! News. “They are very happy, these two, in giving people a no. That’s why we hired them.”

Cowell has been outspoken on how long he has been waiting to work with Spears. He has watched her as a singer, a celebrity and as a person for a long time.

“Britney, I’m not going to lie about this, I always said the number one person I would want on one of these shows was Britney because I was fascinated with her as a person, as a pop star,” said Cowell. “She’s a really, really good judge.”

As for Lovato, Cowell seems to like her also, and is very happy with The X-Factor’s current judges overall.

“Demi is a brat,” Simon continued, “but there’s something really likable about her as well. I think the show, because it has such a young audience, it needed someone younger.”

The X-Factor premieres its new season in the fall.
