Katie Holmes returns to her roots as an actress as she officially says good-bye to ex-husband Tom Cruise. Holmes is set to star in Theresa Rebeck’s Dead Accounts, an intimate play directed by three-time Tony award-winner Jack O’Brien. Producers of the show spoke with the Associated Press and confirmed Holmes’ role in the five-character comedy. This job marks her first role since the whirlwind divorce from actor Tom Cruise last month.

Holmes’ divorce to Tom Cruise has dominated recent headlines. Notably, the entertainment world marveled at the speed at which the divorce was finalized. There are no confirmed reports on if Holmes will receive alimony or what child-support payments Cruise will pay out for joint-custody of their six-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise. However it looks like Suri will remain in Manhattan for the immediate time being and will be raised Catholic under her mother’s supervision.

Katie Holmes began her acting career on the stage beginning with numerous roles in high school plays and musicals. Her most recent role on Broadway was 2008’s All My Sons for which Katie earned hesitant praise from critics. At the time, the Associated Press commented on Holmes’ defining stage presence but “lacking vocal variety.”

Holmes likely won’t need to sing for her upcoming role in Dead Accounts. The play got its start at the Cincinnati Playhouse last winter and centers on “prodigal son’s Jack unexpected visit to Cincinnati from New York City” and his family concerns over his personal life. Producers did not reveal to the Associated Press which role Holmes was cast for in Dead Accounts.
