Creative DIY nursery decor

With these ideas, you can create your own nursery decor as an alternative to popular (and sometimes expensive) nursery decorations.

Woman painting nursery

By creating a DIY project, you not only save some money, you can customize your creations to coordinate or match perfectly with your style and your nursery’s theme.

Tip: You can use this method on any wall space to display your favorite quotes, baby’s initials or a special message just for your baby.

Stenciled wall letters, names and quotes

One of the easiest and safest ways to add your baby’s name to the wall above the crib is to paint it. Even though paint can be very unforgiving, there are ways to failproof your DIY painted letters.

  1. Select your stencil and cut out the letters you will be using — leaving an inch or two of space above and below each letter.
  2. Arrange your letters on a flat surface to determine how much space you need on the wall, how much space you will use between letters and to find the center point.
  3. Tape a strip of poster board to the top and the bottom of the stencils to keep them in place.
  4. Measure the length of the name and find the center point.
  5. Measure your crib, find the center and mark the wall at the height you wish your painted letters to be.
  6. With painter’s tape, tape the stencils to the wall, matching the center point to your center mark on the wall.
  7. With a pencil, carefully trace each letter on the wall.
  8. Remove the stencil from the wall.
  9. With a thin paintbrush, paint the letters on the wall.
  10. Let dry and apply a second coat if needed.

Painted nursery letters

Tip: You can buy unfinished wooden letters or cardboard letters at almost every craft store.

DIY nursery wall letters

Large hanging 3D wall letters are one of the most popular trends in nursery decor. But the colors are usually limited and the prices can be high — especially when your baby has a long name. Making your own wall letters can be a simple and fun project for moms, dads or as a group activity at a baby shower.

  • Paint wooden letters with wall paint that matches or coordinates with the color of your nursery walls.
  • Paint cardboard letters with craft or acrylic paints to complement your nursery theme and decor.
  • To Mod Podge your wooden or cardboard letters with scrapbook paper or colored napkins, mix craft paint with water to create liquid glue then, with a paintbrush, apply the glue to the letter. Lay pieces of the paper or napkin on the letter and carefully apply another coat of glue.

DIY nursery projects with scrapbook paper

To decorate the room — or to temporarily fill empty picture frames that are waiting for baby’s arrival — place colored, patterned or textured scrapbook paper inside of your nursery’s picture frames. Scrapbook paper can also be used when making a ceiling mobile or can be cut into tags to hang on clothes hangers to divide your baby’s clothing into sections and sizes.
