East Coast vs. West Coast: Baby name trends

Even though Jacob and Sophia are the most popular baby names in the United States as a whole, it is interesting to note the differences in baby name trends on the West Coast versus the East Coast. For example, Mason is a popular boy’s name on the West Coast, while Emma is one of the most popular baby girl names on the East Coast. The Social Security Administration just released the top baby names in the U.S., taken from all birth certificates in the United States. For the 13th year in a row, Jacob was the most popular boy name. Sophia was the new most popular girl name, taking the place of Isabella.

How do these top names compare to the top names on the East Coast versus the West Coast?

The most popular baby names in California are right on trend with the rest of the country, with Jacob and Sophia nabbing the top spot. Check out the top 10 girl names and boy names:

What about baby names in the Northwest? The top boy name in Washington state is Mason, followed by Liam and Alexander. Logan, William and Benjamin are other popular names in the Northwest.

For girls, the top name in Washington state is Sophia, followed by Olivia. Other notable baby girl names in the Northwest include Abigail, Chloe, Elizabeth and Madison.

For boys in Maine, the top baby name is Mason, with Wyatt, Jackson and Owen all in the top 10 spots. The top girl name in Maine is Emma, with Addison, Abigail and Grace all top contenders as well.

The top baby names in the Southeast are slightly different than those in the Northeast. For example, the top boy name in Florida is Jayden, with Noah, Elijah and Daniel all in the top 10. The top girl name in Florida is Isabella, however Gabriella, Abigail, Mia and Chloe are also the top contenders.

On the East Coast, old-fashioned baby names, such as Victoria and Nathaniel, are popular — as are virtue names, such as Serenity and Genesis. We are seeing longer names on the list, however there are quite a few short baby names cropping up on the popular baby name list, including Leo, Zoe and Lily.

On the West Coast, trendy names are popular for girls, including Giselle, Arianna, Daisy and Khloe. The close proximity to Mexico is obvious when looking at the Spanish names that are popular, including Diego, Angel, Miguel and Alejandro.
