3 Beach crafts for kids

The beach is a mecca for free craft supplies. Here’s how to use your kids’ beach collections to do three fun beachy crafts.

Shell windchimes

These simple windchimes are easy to make and look so pretty hanging. Choose lighter (weight) shells for best results.

You need:

  • fishing line or jewelry wire
  • shells with holes in them
  • 1 starfish
  • ribbon

Directions:

  1. Using the fishing line or jewelry wire, string up 3-4 shells along a 12-inch length, tying them on to secure. Repeat, creating 5 of these.
  2. Tie one end of each string to the starfish legs, allowing them to dangle down. If desired, you can create two strings for each leg for more shell action.
  3. Wrap the ribbon around the center of the starfish and create a loop above to hang it from.
  4. Hang in a place with a light breeze and enjoy the sweet sounds it makes.

Sweet Seashell Picture Frame

These pretty beachy frames are perfect for safeguarding your precious beach vacation photos.

You need:

  • 1 unfinished wood picture frame
  • 1 paint brush
  • 1 paint, color of choice
  • hot glue gun (with glue!)
  • shells

Directions:

  1. Line a workspace with newspaper, setting the frame on top. Using the paint brush and paint, paint the frame all over. If desired, do a second coat to ensure an even coloring or use additional colors to create designs on the frame.
  2. Lay out shells, sea glass and other beach items on the frame where you want them. Use a hot glue gun to carefully glue each item down.
  3. Let the glue cool fully before handling.

Homemade shell jewelry box

Do your kids covet those cute shell-covered jewelry boxes in gift shops? If so, let them create their own special version in this easy beach craft.

You need:

  • 1 unfinished wood jewelry box
  • paint brush(es), as needed
  • paint(s)
  • hot glue gun (and the glue to go in it!)
  • shells, sea glass, etc.

Directions:

  1. Set the unfinished jewelry box on a newspaper-lined surface. Using the paint brush and paint, apply paint all over. If desired, use a second color to add designs to the jewelry box. Let dry completely.
  2. Arrange shells, sea glass and other beach objects on the box, as desired.
  3. Using the hot glue gun, affix shells to the box. Let cool completely.

Beach crafting tips:

  • Although these crafts call for shells, they can be made with driftwood, reeds, sea glass and even well-tumbled stones. Use your discretion (and preferences) to decide what to use.
  • Be sure to supervise whenever a hot glue gun is being used. It really does get hot, so exercising caution is essential. For younger children, use teamwork (as in, they choose the shells and placement and you do the gluing).
  • If desired, you can spray these crafts with a glaze to give them a shiny finish.
