Are you a good friend?

Whether you’re in a fairly new relationship that hasn’t left you much time for friends, or your job and other daily to-dos keep you from spending too much time in your social circle, it’s time to refocus on friendship.

Here are some simple ways to be a better friend:

1

Listen more

Sometimes, we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget that other people might have something to share. Friendships are about give and take, and both parties should get a chance to talk. Try to focus more on listening, rather than just talking your BFF’s ear off every time you see her. Being a good listener is an underrated skill that can really make you a better friend. The more you truly listen, the more in tune with your BFF’s ups and downs you become and the better you get at picking up on signs that something isn’t right.

2Ask questions

The more questions you ask, the better you’ll understand your friend’s issues, and the more you’ll be able to help. We all want to have our turns to talk, especially if we have big news to share — but you need to show you care (and that you’re listening) by asking thoughtful questions about whatever your friend is telling you. She’ll be more apt to open up, and she’ll feel that she has your full attention.

3Be supportive

We all lead jam-packed lives full of stress and problems that need to be solved, but offering support to others is important. Whether your BFF lost her job, can’t figure out why she didn’t get that promotion or just needs to let loose and have a girl’s night out, being there for her when she needs it can make or break your friendship. Tune in to how she’s feeling and be there when you sense she needs you.
