One of the most exciting aspects of planning a party is picking out your stationery. The color, the design, the message. However, after they are sent out, fawned over, responded to and photographed, they get moved to boxes, junk drawers and cabinets to collect dust and get lost or forgotten. After all the time you spent making them (not to mention how much it cost), don’t hide them away! Turn those invites into beautiful framed artwork with this DIY project.
This easy project is the perfect way to show off your beautiful invitations for years to come and further document that very special day in your life. This works with any kind of invitation, wedding, bridal shower, baby shower — you name it!
What you’ll need:
- Invitation
- 8″ x 10″ frame
- lace printed stationery* (you can DIY with this tutorial or buy it here)
- Scissors
- Tape or a Command Strip
- Glue
- Pencil
*You can use any kind of printed paper or stationery you’d like, or just use plain white 8-by-10 cardstock to glue the invitation on. I used the lace pattern from the edges of another piece of wedding stationery.
Step 1: Tape invitation in the center of the frame
Place a small Command Strip or piece of tape on the middle of the back of the invitation.
Hold down the invitation so it stays in place.
Step 2: Cut stationery so it fits around the invitation
If you are using patterned stationery or white cardstock that is 8 x 10 or the size of the frame, you can skip this step. If you are using smaller stationery, as I did, you need to cut and trim the stationery so it fits perfectly around the invite. To do this, mark with a pen or pencil on the stationery where you need to cut it so the lace or pattern surrounds the invite.
It’s best to make the mark on the back of the pattern so you don’t see it. Once you’ve measured around the invite, it’s time to cut the appropriate amount of patterned paper so you surround the invite without any gaps.
Then trim so the pieces of paper fit around the invite and in the frame perfectly. Any overhang will make it hard for the frame to shut.
Place the strips around the invite exactly where you want them to be (and where the lines are the cleanest).
Step 3: Gently tape or glue the lace stationery around the invitation
If you think you’ll be swapping out this art for another photo at some point, use tape so it’s easily removed. If you want this to be more permanent, use glue. Carefully tape or glue the lace patterned strips around the invitation. Don’t worry about overlapping because once you put the glass over it, it’ll be nearly impossible to see.
Hold strips down so they don’t budge and let sit for about 5 minutes or until the glue dries.
Step 4: Place glass, secure art and display
Carefully place the glass and frame over the invitation artwork, secure it and display where you’d like.
