They seemed to have the perfect marriage in the beginning. How did things go so wrong so fast?
More details have surfaced surrounding Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorce, saying that Cruise was blindsided by Holme’s decision to divorce him.
It has been five years since Tom Cruise jumped up on Oprah‘s couch announcing his love for Katie Holmes, so it seemed to shock everyone when they announced they were splitting up.
But how much of a surprise was it really?
Holmes and their daughter Suri have been seen out on numerous occasions lately, and Cruise was rarely with them.
“Holmes, it seems, was flying solo in this made-for-Oprah marriage,” said USA Today, “so it comes as little surprise to relationship experts that she filed for divorce from her husband of five years.”
Many say Holmes has been away from Cruise for a long time, because of work commitments from both of them. So perhaps the announcement on Friday was only making official what had been for a long time. Some in the therapy world are weighing in on the marriage.
“I’m doing this all by myself now (anyway), so I can just go ahead and make it official,” says Miami-based marriage therapist Jacqueline Del Rosario told USA Today in reference to what Holmes is probably thinking.
Cruise’s rep only said he is sad at the development, but he plans to focus on his three children. It seems this is what Holmes has been doing the whole time.
“Solo marriage works for people that do not want that kind of closeness,” New York psychotherapist Weil told USA Today. “I think Katie needed more closeness, and she got it from her daughter because she couldn’t get it from Tom.”
Another family therapist, Kathryn Smerling, said, “Her love affair has been with Suri.” She said “You see that she’s so animated when she’s with her,” and not when she’s with her husband. In those shots, she is ‘always posed.’ … She looks just like a movie star, not a real person.”
Of course, anyone can guess what happened with the marriage, but the only two people who really know are Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise.
The 33-year-old actress has asked for full custody of Suri.
