After less than two months in theaters, The Avengers is set to become only the third film in history to pass $600 million domestically.
They say it’s lonely at the top.
But lucky for James Cameron, he finally has some company up there. The Avengers is set to pass the $600 million mark today, a feat only accomplished by Cameron films Titanic and Avatar.
“Marvel’s The Avengers opened in North America May 4 with a staggering $207.4 million, the biggest domestic debut of all time,” said a Disney rep. “[It] has been shattering domestic box office records ever since.”
Titanic hit the $600 million mark after 252 days and Avatar hit the mark after 47 days, making The Avengers’ 54 days pretty impressive.
Avatar to date has grossed just over $760 million domestically and Titanic is just under $659 million. With how quickly The Avengers has gotten to this point, they are on the path to overtake Titanic, and soon.
The film also hit the industry’s all-time second-weekend record with $103 million.
The Avengers is at almost $1.45 billion internationally, making it the third highest-grossing film worldwide also.
“Among only 12 films that have grossed $1 billion at the global box office, Marvel’s The Avengers is one of five billion-dollar Disney releases,” said Disney, “which also include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”
The list of top 10 domestic films is rounded out by The Dark Knight at $533.3 million, Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace at $474.5 million, Star Wars at $461 million, Shrek 2 at $441.2 million, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial at $435.1 million, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest at $423.3 million and The Lion King at $422.8 million, according to E! News.
E! News also reports that The Avengers has also outgrossed the three films in the same series leading up to its release: The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor.
Thor 2 is in production now and is set to be released in 2013.
