Trace Cyrus and Brenda Song call off engagement

The Metro Station singer and his Disney girlfriend have called off their engagement only eight months after getting engaged.

People reports that Cyrus’s eight-month long engagement to Brenda Song has ended.

“Brenda and I have decided to go our separate ways. We split up a couple of months ago. We will continue to focus on our careers,” Cyrus said in a statement. “I wish Brenda the best and much success in the future. I hope everyone can respect our privacy about this situation.”

Trace and Song were engaged in October.

On Oct. 14, 2011, Cyrus tweeted “I am very excited to say, last week I asked my girlfriend Brenda Song to marry me and she said YES! We are both very excited to be engaged!”

In January, when asked about his wedding plans, Cyrus said he was in no hurry to be married.

“I want to have a Vegas wedding,” Cyrus told People. “But [Brenda] doesn’t want to do that, of course. Every girl wants a big, beautiful wedding. And at the end of the day, I’ll do whatever she wants.”

Song and Trace’s sister Miley both got their starts on Disney shows. She is a year older than Trace. He is the lead singer of the pop group Metro Station, and is now performing as Ashland High.

Song has not made a statement about the breakup. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody star most recently starred in The Social Network.

Last week Miley Cyrus announced her engagement to Liam Hemsworth, her boyfriend of three years.

When asked about her timeline for marriage, she gave a similar answer as her brother. Both Cyrus siblings stressed the importance of putting their careers before marriage. Miley said she wants to finish her album before she walks down the aisle with Hemsworth, and it looks like she is getting closer to that goal.
