The Hangover continues box office domination

Bradley Cooper kept his hot streak going for a second weekend in a row as The Hangover scored as the nation’s top film.

The comedy is proving to be the hilarious hit of the summer. Imagine That, the latest family comedy from Eddie Murphy, failed to capture the top spot as it landed in sixth place. While The Hangover is also the first surprise hit of the summer, Imagine That became Murphy’s second flop in a row.

Up took the second spot with a healthy $30.5 million, driving its total to an astonishing $187.2 million.

The Hangover earned another $33.4 million in its first full week of release and took only 10 days to hit the magic $100 million mark. Thus far, Cooper and company’s hit comedy has taken in $105.4 million. That feat was good enough to knock off the ladies of Sex and the City as the quickest R-rated comedy to hit the $100 million mark.

Ed Helms of The Office co-stars in The Hangover from the director of Old School, Todd Phillips. Warner Brothers could not be more thrilled with their unexpected hit that had the most effective of marketing campaigns.

John Travolta and Denzel Washington also opened a film this week, the remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. The film opened at number 3 making $25 million in its first weekend.

Murphy’s box office troubles continued with Imagine That, whose sixth place finish was a product of a lackluster $5.7 million opening weekend.
