Top 3 simple, summer-ready hair looks

Summer is all about creating a look that’s casual yet chic, simple yet stylish. No one wants to look like they’re trying too hard during the hottest months of the year. How does this apply to hair? The key is to spend minimal time and minimal product while still looking polished and on trend.

Elle MacPhearsons soft touchable waves

We asked Patrick Melville, celebrity hairstylist and Aveeno hair care ambassador, for some insight into how to wear our hair this summer. He shares three of his favorite summer looks to try now.

Beachy waves

Loose, sultry waves are one of the most sought-after summer hair looks and one we love to rock all season. Start by shampooing and conditioning hair and blow drying freely or with a diffuser. No brush is needed for this look. Take a 1-inch curling iron and wrap sections of hair loosely around the iron from root to ends, being sure not to make it too perfect. Your goal is to create a slight “s” bend in the hair. Keep going until you’ve done your whole head and then break up the curls with your fingers for that effortless beachy look. “This style looks great either pulled back or worn loose,” says Melville.

The braid is back in full force this season and a great way to wear your hair in the heat. Pull hair back to one side (either left or right) and pinch into a side ponytail. Secure with elastic. Split your ponytail into three sections and loosely braid. Be sure not to make it too tight and secure the braid with an elastic at the end. “One thing I do to make it a little soft and sexy is to run my fingers up the braid to break it up,” advises Melville.

Sexy chignon

The chignon is a timeless style perfect for summer since it keeps the hair off the back of your neck. “This will keep you cool, as well as looking fantastic,” says Melville. Start by slicking hair back into either a center side or side part (or straight back). Grab hair at the nape of your neck and secure into a low ponytail. Tease ponytail slightly with a comb for added volume and then twist into a messy chignon, securing with bobby pins, for a soft sexy summer look. Pin any loose strands back with clips or more bobby pins.

When it comes to general summer hair health, there are a few key components to top-notch tresses. “Keeping hair healthy in the heat requires a leave-in conditioner, possibly one with a UV-protector infused, as well as weekly deep conditioning treatments,” Melville advises. “If you are shampooing your hair every day, try to use a shampoo that is sulfate-free, such as Aveeno’s new Pure Renewal.”
