The Hunger Games: Get Katniss’ hairstyles

There are about a million reasons to love The Hunger Games‘ heroine Katniss Everdeen. Her kick butt, no excuses attitude is a wonderful role model for girls of all ages. The best part? She does it all with effortless style. We’ve got the inside details on her signature hairstyles — and how you can get the same look at home.

Katniss Everdeen’s life is not exactly a fairy tale. The 16-year-old lives in the poverty-stricken area of District 12, known as The Seam. Her time is spent hunting and trying to survive, leaving little opportunity to worry about anything else. So, it’s only natural that hair stylists behind the film wanted to strip actress Jennifer Lawrence of her luxurious blonde hair.

“Jennifer actually likes the color,” The Hunger Games hairstylist Petenbrink said of the flat brown color she created for the actress. “She’s still wearing it, even though she has finished filming!”

Oddly enough, the “drab” brown color is anything but drab — and it fits in well with Lawrence’s skin tone. However, we’re more obsessed with the French braid she rocks throughout the time in The Arena. Braids are especially hot right now and we’re always looking for ways to give ours a more sophisticated edge (we don’t want to be mistaken for a sixth grader, ya know?). To get some hairstyle tips, we turned to Boston hair stylist Nicholas Penna Jr., owner of SalonCapri. The master stylist gave us the low-down on how to sex up a Katniss braid for everyday wear.

Create Katniss’ signature braid

“Katniss’ battle look is a sporty variation on the classic French braid,” Penna told us. Getting the hairstyle is relatively simple, just as long as you’re able to create a French braid.

1

Add a texture spray to dry hair. Penna’s go-to is Shu Uemura’s Liquid Fabric Mineral.

2

Gather a front section of hair above your ear and begin with the typical French braid stitch. Enlist the help of a friend if you need extra hands.

3

As you continue your braid, guide hair in a diagonal line across the back of your head by collecting strands from each side as you go, advises Penna.

4

Once you reach the nape of your neck, finish the look with a common braid and secure the ends with a clear elastic.

5

Set the knotted style with a light spritz of hairspray. Penna likes Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer.

6

Add some sex appeal by pulling face-framing pieces out of the braid around your face.

Get Katniss’ sexy Capitol updo

Katniss gets a sexy updo

Katniss was out of her element when she was whisked to the Capitol for Hunger Games preparation. There, she was introduced to things she never experienced before, including beautiful fashion, makeup and different hairstyles.

Cinna (played by Lenny Kravitz) created this simple chignon updo for her presentation and interview with Caesar. Want to recreate it for yourself? You’re in luck — it’s even easier than the French braid.

Create Katniss’ simple chignon hairstyle

1

Work a bit of mousse or anti-frizz serum into dry hair to tame strands before starting.

2

Pull hair into a tight ponytail. You can either opt for one at the base of the head or higher up toward the crown, depending on your preference. Secure with an elastic band.

3

Tuck the ponytail under and pin it with enough bobby pins to keep it secure. Add hairspray to keep the hold.

4

Pull out some pieces around your face to create a sexy, tousled look.
